Altitude: Hunting areas in Astore are typically 3,000–4,000+ meters above sea level. Proper acclimatization and physical fitness are essential.
Climate: Expect cold mornings/evenings (–5°C to –15°C) in winter months and milder daytime temperatures. Weather is unpredictable snow, wind and rain possible anytime.
Hunt Style: Spot and stalk with extensive glassing. Hunters should be ready for long hikes on steep terrain.
Health & Insurance: Comprehensive travel & medical insurance covering evacuation is mandatory. Carry any personal medications.
Firearms & Ammunition: Hunters may import rifles with prior permit or request rental rifles from the outfitter. Recommended caliber: .300 Win Mag, .338, or similar for long range mountain shots.
Communication: Satellite phones and radios are available in camp. Cellular service may be limited or absent in hunting valleys.

Astore Valley lies in the heart of Gilgit-Baltistan, surrounded by rugged mountains and glaciers.
Hunts take place in remote, high-altitude valleys (3,000–4,000+ m) with steep climbs and thin air good physical condition is required.
Trophy hunting season in Gilgit-Baltistan usually runs November – March (winter months), when markhor descend to more accessible elevations.
Cold, unpredictable weather is part of the experience expect snow, wind and sudden temperature drops.
Spot & stalk is the main method. Hunters spend long hours glassing hillsides, followed by physically demanding stalks over rocky slopes.
Success rates are very high in Astore blocks but weather and endurance can affect outcomes.
Markhor hunting permits are issued through the Gilgit-Baltistan Wildlife Department auction system.
A significant share of permit fees goes directly to local communities and conservation, ensuring sustainable hunting practices.
Only one markhor may be harvested per permit.
You must carry your hunting permit, passport and visa at all times.
Rifle import permits must be arranged in advance.
For trophy export, a CITES certificate and customs clearance are mandatory.
Access is via Islamabad → Gilgit flight (45 min) or a full-day road transfer via the Karakoram Highway (in case of weather delays).
